[edit] Good Visual

Maxim, September 2007

The above visualization does a good job at depicting the height of Tokyo's new radio tower against existing skyscrapers. The contrast with the smaller buildings in the background also shows how high the building will be relative to other buildings in it's given location. The lie factor also appears to be good.

Deconstruction The dataset consists of four one dimensional measurements of building height. The height of each building is represented in terms of length in the vertical direction. The length is encoded by a scaled version of each building with the building of interest in color and all others as a black silhouette. Although the smaller buildings in the background of Tokyo do not pertain directly to the image, its contrast with the buildings of interest helps to emphasize the height of the new radio tower.

Packet8 User Guide

Image:Packet8.png

The voicemail tree is almost a good visualization except an annoying detail. The top of the tree has 1,2, and 3 being connected by a red line. It's unclear if the user should press 1 and then 2 to reach call settings. The top level shouldn't be connected at all.

Deconstruction The dataset consists of an nominal data(a two or three digit number) corresponding to different voicemail functions represented as a tree. The nodes represent one digit in the number pertaining a voicemail feature. The edges represents an elapse in time and enforces an ordering of which number must be pressed after another. The color red corresponds to the first digit in each voicemail function and is represented as roots of the trees. An unnecessary element of the tree is the red lines connecting the root nodes as they add confusion as to whether there is a sequence that needs to be pressed.

[edit] Revision

Image:Packet8rev.png

I actually thought that the original tree was a rather good visualization if it were not for the red lines connecting the top level nodes. In my revision, I simply removed the red lines as they added confusion. In the new version, there is no longer confusion as to whether there numbers to the left has to be pressed before accessing the red nodes on the right.
