Analysis

1. 21 pro

The target user group for this app consists of blackjack players of all skill levels. However, our project’s target user group will include card game players in general who wish to play with a deck of cards freely, and not only to play blackjack. The benefits of this app is that it offers help for beginners with the “mastering the game” mode which describes the Blackjack rules and includes other basic information about the game such as strategies and terminology. The interface is easy to use. For betting, the player can only tap the amount of chips he wishes to put. It also comes with a card counter for players who want to play and bet cleverly. Our proposed idea, however, will include more than just a user’s manual and will allow a user to explain another one how to play a particular game through messages and practice modes. It will also allow the user to shake the iPod for shuffling cards and the user can also simulate real movements such as sliding the finger for putting a bet on the table.

2. Headsup Poker Free

The target user group is made up of players who wish to play any of these four card games: Texas Hold'em, Omaha, Blackjack or Heads Up Blackjack. It also supports peer to peer gaming via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Our target user group also consists of players who wish to play the four card games mentioned above, but it will also allow them to play with a deck of cards freely without any limits and with other people through a network. The benefit of this app is that it provides a very simple and easy to use interface, especially for people who are still new to their iPhone/iPod touch device. The app is mainly controlled by buttons on the screen. The graphics and animation is also simple. Our app, however, will contain more animation and user interaction that is more similar to a real card game. It will not be limited to only tapping the buttons to do a specific action such as fold, call or raise. Our app will let the users shake the device for shuffling the cards and will also let the users touch and drag the chips for betting. Every movement that the user has to make will be intuitive and similar to the real game, which will make it easy for people who are still new to their iPhone/iPod touch.

3. Poker – MegaPoker Online Texas Holdem

The target user group for this app includes Texas Hold’em players who want to play with real people across the net through 3G/Wi-Fi/EDGE. This is similar to our target user group, in that the app supports multi-playing through a network without the players being in the same room. However, our target user group will also consist of card game players who wish to play other card games than just Texas Hold’em. The benefit of this app is that its interface environment resembles a real casino, where there is an oval-shaped table and the players “sit” around it. The players are represented by their nicknames and each player’s turn is limited to 15 seconds. In addition, this app lets you chat with the other players. The game also maintains ratings and levels to help the user improve his/her game. Similarly, our app will provide the ability of adjustable timed-turns and chatting among other players in the game. It will also allow players to have their own level so that they can challenge players of the same level. But our app will also have a better interface by showing more than just the top view of the game table. Our app will have different views such as a view that only shows your cards as if you were holding them and another view of the game table where you can see how many chips are in the pot and how many chips each player still have.

4. Heads Up: Hold’em Lite – Free Poker

The target user group for this app is poker players who wish to play against a friend or against the AI. Our target user group, on the other hand, will also include players who which to play another card game. The benefits that this application offer to the user is that it provides a “Cards Only Game” mode where the user doesn’t have to use chips for betting and allows the user to use any “house rule”. For our target user group, however, this mode still limits their needs and only lets them play poker. Our target user group will be allowed to play any card game and set up any unusual rules that they want by having a mode that allows them to play with a deck of cards freely. This app is easy to use as it provides an intuitive touch and motion-based controls that keep the interface simple. However, our app will be more realistic, since it will provide a view that will seem as if the user was holding his/her own set of cards while they are only holding their mobile device. Like the Heads Up application, our app will provide motion-based controls such as sliding the finger for dealing cards and betting chips.

5. Live Poker 10K Free by Zynga

This app is targeted towards fans of the online poker game application found on Facebook called “Live Poker”. Our app, on the other hand, will be target card game players who don’t need to have a special account and who don’t want to specifically play poker. The benefits of this application are that it allows to play poker with other “Live Poker” players and that you don’t have to login to Facebook from your computer to play this game. It also allows chatting while playing. Our application will also allow playing with other users across the network and it will also support instant messaging while playing. In addition, our app will also support real-based movements to do actions such as dealing and betting in order to give the user a more realistic experience.

6. Texas Hold’Em

The target user group for this app is people who like to play Texas Hold’em with virtual chips for betting. Similarly, our target user group includes poker players, but also integrates users who like to play other card games. One of the benefits of this application is that it provides realistic graphics and interaction. The opponents and the dealer are live animation, and the user can even see their betting history, best hand, and current chip total. Another benefit that this app provides is the ability of multiplayer mode with eight more people through the Wi-Fi network. However, I have read many reviews from this app about the difficulty of setting the network for multiplayer mode. This app requires all players to be connected to the same wireless router. Our app, on the other hand, doesn’t require players to be in the same room, because the multiplayer mode will be supported not only by Wi-Fi but also by 3G and WAN. Even though the opponents are realistic, the AI in this game is predictable. Therefore, we want our app to target users who prefer to play with real people and our challenge will be to enable multiplayer mode with a better network other than Wi-Fi so that long-distance gaming can be possible.

7. Big 2 Poker

The target user for this app is people who enjoy playing the popular Asian game Big Deuce. Our target user group, however, will also include people who enjoy playing other card games with a regular deck of cards and want to set their own rules. One of the benefits of this app is the ability to sort your hand by rank or by suit. It also allows changing other game options such as the rotation of the game as clockwise or counterclockwise, the skill level, the amount of dollars to wage per card, and the deck design. However, it doesn’t support a multiplayer mode, which is required by our target user group. In addition, our app will include more settings that the user can adjust as they like so that it suits the card game they want to play. for example, our app will allow users to play with the two joker cards.

8. Solebon Solitaire

The target user group for this app is players who like playing solitaire. It is also targeted to solitaire players who like to play other variations of solitaire such as Free Cell and Aces Up. Our target user group, however, will also include users who want to play card games with real opponents. One of the benefits of this app is that its interface is attractive and easy to use. A card can be tapped in order to select it and the user can tap the screen again where he thinks the card should go. The card won’t move unless an acceptable place is tapped. However, since our app is targeted towards players who wish to play with a deck of cards freely, we are going to allow any movements made by the user, no matter if it violates the rules of an already existing game. In addition, our app will include more real-based movements than just tapping a card, such as dragging the cards for dealing and shaking the mobile device for shuffling the cards.

9. Crazy Eights

This app is targeted towards users who enjoy playing the card game “Crazy Eights.” Our target user group, on the other hand, includes users who enjoy playing crazy eight but also wish to play other card game with the deck of cards. The app is easy to use and the movements that the user makes to play are real-based. For example, the user can browse through his cards by sliding his finger on his hand of cards. For beginners, the app illuminates the cards that can be played from the rest of the hand. To deal a card, the user has to slide his finger until the card he wants to deal stands out and that way he can slide his finger to put the card on the table. This app makes a good interface with the user, but our app will include other features that are common in card games such as chips for betting. Our app will also include options that can be adjusted by the users such as how many cards each player is given at the start and how many chips must be bet on each game.

10. Speed Fiend

This app’s target user group is users who like to play the card game Speed. However, our target user group consists of people who do not only want to play a single game with a deck of cards. One of the benefits of this app is the ability to select the appropriate game level since this card game may take beginners by surprise. It also allows two player mode, but using the same mobile device. Our app, however, will enable connection of two or more iPod/iPhone through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G so that each player feels comfortable playing on one single device.

Summary

After looking at many competitive applications, I can say that many of them are specific for one game only. Although there are applications that say that there is more than one card game in one app, such as solebon solitaire, I feel that they are all similar and that they are only variations of the same game. Our app, however, is aiming to let the user play any card game he wants with other friends through Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/3G network. In addition, our target user group will be provided with more game settings that they can adjust so that the card game suits their needs. In addition, we are aiming to provide realistic graphics so that the user feels comfortable making real-based movements, as if they were really playing with a real deck of cards.
