Restatement of the group's idea

Our idea is a skateboarding app that keeps a list of all the tricks you have done and where.

Analysis

iSkateboard

Target User Group: The target group is new skateboarders who are looking for new parks and skateshops. This is different from our target group since our app tries to improve the skills of skaters by allowing them to upload tricks and have a completion list of tricks they have done. More for intermediates who already know where to skate and just want to improve.

Functionality: It gives a map and lists all the locations of where one can find skateshops and skate parks. This is kept up to date by the creator. With our app we will let the user create locations and upload videos that refer to specific spots. In this way it is kept more up to date by the community and is more verifiable with videos.

Usability: The successes of the app is that the map is easy to use and find spots since it just uses google maps. Some complaints were that you could not add your own location which is a feature that we would definitely like to implement. Also the locations were sometimes wrong which we would fix by having only video uploads with the location marked be listed so that it is accurate.

Go Learn Skateboarding

Target User Group: Their target user group is skaters who want to learn how to do tricks and improve their skills. It pretty much matches the kind of target user group we are targeting.

Functionality: The benefit of the application is that it can teach you tricks and has professional videos which show you how to pull off certain tricks. However, it does not have user generated content which would allow users to record themselves and track their progress. At the same time with videos you can see what kind of errors you are making while trying to do a trick and correct them.

Usability: Their skateboard park locator is through text based entry and gives a list of locations. This doesn't allow for a general view of the map so that you can find which direction the closest park is. I believe using a google maps based map would be much better to implement as it gives an overall view of where skate locations would be. The videos that are uploaded are of high quality which is quite nice which we would also have to keep in mind since ours is generally user generated content.

The Berrics Skateboarding

Target User Group: Their target user group is skater enthusiasts who want to watch pro skateboarders do tricks. This is different from our target user group because we're looking for skaters who want to improve while this is for people who are just interested in seeing people skateboard and may not even skateboard themselves.

Functionality: Allows the user to watch pro skateboarders in high quality videos. The scope is limited to videos of people who want to watch skateboarders and doesn't teach how or where to go. Our idea will allow users to learn from other amateurs how to pull off certain tricks and allow them to record themselves. This app is more for the laid back skater who wants to watch fun videos whereas our app will allow skaters to actively improve their own skills.

Usability: Their app does what it's intended to do very well and that is just to watch high quality videos of skaters. Unfortunately the creators have to update the content themselves. Ours is based off of user generated content and will allow people to upload their own content for the community.

Transworld Skateboarding

Target User Group: Their target user group is skaters who are trying to learn tricks and want the latest news on skating. Our target group is a little different where they are just trying to learn new tricks and may/may not be interested in the latest news on skating.

Functionality: The benefit of the app for the user is that it allows them to learn skate tricks and tips from the pros. However, it doesn't allow for people to critique your technique. Our app will allow users to upload their own videos and review what mistakes they are making and how they can correct them.

Usability: The usability is great in that there are high quality videos listed for certain tricks. However, there are only a few tricks and they are unorganized and just listed one after another with no real order. For our app we will have a list of tricks and when you select a trick there will be a list of videos for that specific trick.

Skateropolis

Target User Group: Their target user group is for skaters looking to connect with other skaters and find new parks. Our target group is more towards skaters who are looking to improve themselves.

Functionality: The benefit of this app is that they can connect with other skaters near or far and can find nearby skateparks. With the connect feature they can have groups and post to each other. Our proposed idea won't include interaction between users that close but allows users to upload videos of themselves skating and rate them.

Usability: In terms of usability having the multi-media hub feature which has some twitter-like talk functions and groups is quite well done. Our app will improve on the fact that you can upload your own videos, pin them to a location, and rate them. We can also keep up to date with the locations of skateparks and skating spots by letting users generate their own content.

Skate Tricks

Target User Group: Their target user group is for skaters looking to improve/learn tricks. Our target user group is pretty much the same.

Functionality: The benefit of this app is that they can watch videos of people in slow motion with detailed instructions on how to pull off tricks. Our app will improve upon this by allowing users to record themselves and can get live feedback from other users of the app.

Usability: In terms of usability it has several tutorial videos on how to do tricks but that is all it has. Our app may not have the slow motion or the detailed instructions but will have a multitude of videos to learn from and can have the user upload his own video for tips from other users.

Sk8battles

Target User Group: Their target user group is for skater enthusiasts who are interested in seeing competitive skate battles. This is different from our target user group since we aim for skaters who are interested in improving their technique/learn new tricks.

Functionality: The benefit of this app is that it allows the user to view how pro skateboarders battle. Our proposed idea will expand upon this by allowing users to upload their own skateboard battles and can watch other amateur battles.

Usability: In terms of usability, this app caters to a very niche group who want to see pro skateboarding battles. Our proposed idea will allow for even amateur skateboarding battles to be uploaded and allow for users to upload what they want to see.

Skatr

Target User Group: Their target user group is for skaters who are looking for new spots to skate at. Our target user group is similar to this but also more catered toward skaters who are looking to improve themselves.

Functionality: The benefit of this app is that it has a comprehensive list of spots for skaters to skate at and people can upload their own skate spots. Our proposed idea expands on this by allowing the user to also upload their own videos at these skate spots and allow people to rate these videos and the spot.

Usability: In terms of usability, the app is nice in that it integrates google maps and streetview which most people are familiar with. However, searching for nearby areas pulls up a list of trick areas which is listed by name which doesn't really say much. A better idea would be to have a map with nearby areas pointed out and a small picture listed along with the spot.

Skate Parks

Target User Group: Their target user group is for skaters who are looking for new spots to skate at. Our target user group is similar to this but also more catered toward skaters who are looking to improve themselves.

Functionality: The benefit of this app is that it has a comprehensive list of spots for skaters to skate at. It also lists almost anything you want to know about the park including: hours of operation, rules, phone #, etc. Our proposed idea expands on this by not only having a database of parks, but also a way for users to add their own parks and update our database so that it is always up to date.

Usability: In terms of usability, the app is nice in that it gives a large list of information for each park. However, it does not have any pictures to recognize what the place looks like and has no ratings for the place which makes it difficult to judge if it's a good place to skate without having to actually go to the park. Also, the locations is just a list of words, a map which points out each of the locations would be a much better way to implement the park finder which is what we're looking into doing.

Boarder Lounge - Snowboard and Skateboard Community

Target User Group: Their target user group is for skaters and snowboarders who want to share their spots. Our target user group is more focused as it's only on skateboarders who aim to improve their skills.

Functionality: The benefit of this app is that it allows for user generated content which is good for keeping the database up to date. It lets people add a spot with a description and picture and other people can rate it. Our proposed idea is similar but we also want to include videos of people at these locations that people can comment on and that the user can review to better themselves.

Usability: In terms of usability, the app is nice in that it allows people to chat in the lounge and upload their own 'spots' painlessly. The GPS finds the users location and the rest can be filled in. Our proposed idea is similar but we also want to allow video uploads of people skating at that spot so people can get a better idea of how the skate spot can be used.

Summary

From my findings most of the skateboarding applications are either locators for skateparks or pro-instructional videos to teach people how to do tricks. Very few apps had the possibility of having a rating system, linked maps, or the ability to upload your own videos. With these 3 as our focus, I believe that we can create an app that focuses primarily on user generated content which will allow for constant updates rather than the static updates that other updates have due to only the creator of the app having access to updating new locations and tricks. An app for the skaters by the skaters is something that I believe is ideal for the userbase and can allow for the community to keep growing as more people add on and share their spots. Something that our app was missing that many other apps had was professional video which I believe would be useful if we were able to have a preset database with a couple of instructional videos for those new to skating.
