Interface One

Plain and simple interface

Advantages

  • Clean main menu interface; appealing to the eye; not cluttered
  • Navigation is simple; does not use keypad
  • Navigation requires only top half of cell phone
  • Sub-menus are easy to understand and follow the clean and simple theme
  • Items are clearly labeled

Disadvantages

  • Cannot select specific time in song for manual scan; only in 30 sec. intervals
  • Buttons for rewind/fast forward and manual scan do too many things; pressing mechanism may be confusing or easy to do incorrectly
  • Music library is only organized in alpha-order by song title; no other sorting options

Interface Two

Close up of huge body of text

Menu always visible on interface.

Advantages

  • User can clearly see menu options at all times; menu easily accessible through any sub-screen
  • Clean interface
  • Items clearly labeled
  • Navigation uses minimal buttons; only makes use of top half, no keypad use
  • Can manual scan to specific time in song

Disadvantages

  • Some users may find always-visible menu distracting.
  • Only small space of screen allotted for song info and song playing status
  • Music library is only organized in alpha-order by song title; no other sorting options
  • Many things to note regarding the jog dial and how it controls options on the screen

Interface Three

All options visible on one screen; no sub-screens

Advantages

  • All options on one screen
  • Easy access to any of the options
  • Repeat, Manual Scan and Shuffle toggled/customized by simply clicking a number (for each) on the keypad; no need for scrolling to find it first then clicking to toggle/customize
  • Can manual scan to specific time in song
  • Displays icon for Play/Pause status

Disadvantages

  • Makes use of many buttons - top half of cell phone and keypad
  • All options on one screen means minimized icons (i.e. volume control has turned into an icon rather than a full page)
  • No music library - can't see current music collection; can only shift through them with next/prev buttons

Personal Choice

I personally like Interface One. I like the clean look the main song screen has. Even though I can't manual scan to a specific time in the song, I don't mind because this is a function I would rarely use. I like how the sub-menus pop-up at the bottom of the screen and leave the song title and artist visible. Furthermore, I really like how I can view the songs in my music library (unlike in Interface Three).
