24. Classroom Notes - professors uses anoto pen or anoto pen based technology in class when writing notes on board and then software to automatically organize and structure notes so they can be put online easily for students to access
25. Interactive Newspaper – newspapers use anoto technology in their paper, users can circle articles that they find interesting and later login to a website and automatically be shown those articles or more information relating to those articles
26. Intelligent Notes - student uses anoto technology while taking notes, can highlight things to look at later, potentially write things that will automatically be looked up in “wikipedia”
27. Interactive maps - Special maps that you can draw on. Anoto pen will sync with computer and tell you how long the route is, what the travel time is, speed limits, etc.
28. Police Tickets – police use anoto pen system when writing tickets so you can receive ticket and court information instantly via e-mail or phone
29. Court System – courts file tons of paper work and it is often cumbersome to access it. Use anoto system to automatically categorize this info so it is easier to look up and access
30. Language Learning system - for complex scripts like Chinese, Japanese, hindi, use a software system so that you can write down letters and have the computer tell you how close to actual letters you are
31. Translation System – write something in one language and “highlight” it with anoto pen and the computer will translate it. This wil just require proper handwriting recognition software.
32. Interactive Menus - you are given a menu and an anoto pen at a restaurant. You circle what you want from the menu and you instantly order that way
33. Waiter.com – use anoto pen to order food / take out from home. Have this interface with internet to send order automatically and you can order delivery
34. Mail order catalogs – use anoto pens with mail order catalogs so you can circle what you want to order and fill out your info and order instantly
35. Job Applications – for big retail companies like Mervyns and Target instead of using a machine / computer at the location, users use this pen and paper and fill out their application which is instantly transmitted

Sushi Bar Order Management System

Idea Selection

After considering the 30+ ideas that our group came up with as well as the individual ideas we originally wrote our project proposals for, we decided to pick the sushi bar ordering idea. The premise is simple: use the anoto pen system with pre-designed menu's so users can simply check off and write down the number of items they want, and this way they can speed up service greatly. We decided to go with this idea because it had real world implications that could be applied in many scenarios, not just at sushi bars. It allows lends itself well to a lot of UI design. We hope the system will allow the owner of a Sushi bar to quickly see several key statistics like what the most popular dishes are by season of the year, or even day of the month, and be able to see which ingredients he should buy. Bottom line, we thought this would be a good project to implement becuase it isn't terribly complicated, it will lend itself to a lot of UI design elements, and it makes efficient use of the anoto pen system.

Target User Group

First and foremostly, as this proposal is written, the target user group are owners and operators of sushi bars. But this project can easily turn into a much more general restaurant ordering utility that can be applied to all fast food shops. It would work well at coffee shops, bagel shops, donut shops, sandwich shops, and other places where you are not paying for good service. This system is not intended to replace the convential waiter at a sit down restaurant. But for fast food shops this can greatly increase effeciency because several people can write down their orders at once, and if they order similar items, they may be able to be served quicker becuase it might take less time to make three or four of an item at once, rather than making that item 4 times seperately.

Problem Description and Context

The problem is simple. Fast food operators, in this case, specifically sushi bar operators, are always looking for ways to cut costs and increase the amount of people served in a certain amount of time. Our proposed system is a new method of ordering food. The customer will walk into the store and use an anoto pen to fill out an order sheet. Some small restaurants already have this type of system. However the difference with the anoto system is that what the customer writes will be instantly tabulated to a computer. This system will facilitate several things: the collection of statistics, instant tabulation of what ingredients are needed, and analytics of quantities of ingredients and how they should be ordered. With statistics the owner of a sushi bar can quickly see which items were ordered the most on a particular day. He can expand this analysis to see the most popular items by season and try to capitalize on these seasonal trends.

Some sushi bars already have a system where users handwrite their orders on little slips and then pass them to the waiter. This system is inefficient because handwriting is often unclear, and the process can often take a long time. Sometimes these slips of paper are lost.

Features

  • Do not need waiter for orders (fewer numbers of employees)
  • Overlapping items can be made together to save time (number of overlapping items are shown on the computer screen)
  • Inventory check -- Checks for items on shortage (gives a rough estimate) (subtracts all necessary components of ordered items from the inventory)
  • Statistics (evaluation)
    • pie chart or bar graphs showing % of items sold
    • depending on hours, days, months
    • depending on weather or temperature
    • depending on number of people per order
    • item preference by age, occupation, gender, ethnicity etc (optional)
  • Customer's anonymous complaint or comment
  • Relatively less error in handwriting recognition because all the inputs are numbers, not alphabet letters.
  • Menu tracking

Why Anoto

We think the Anoto system lends it well to this project for a lot of reasons that other people love the anoto system: it is familiar. It allows people to continue to use an interface they are used to, pen and paper, but it gives you a lot of digital benefits. With our project, the anoto system works great becuase using a pen and paper to write down orders is already a common system. The Anoto pen allows us to capitalize on user familiarity with a system, while being able to implement an entirely new system that allows instant order collection and instant analyitics of orders.
