Class participation

It is important to attend the lectures and read the readings.

Class participation includes both in-class participation as well as participation in the discussion on this wiki. If you are taking the class for credit you are required to post at least 1 substantive discussion comment or question pertaining to each reading. The comments should be the length of a short paragraph (3-4 sentences). Comments should be posted before the lecture in which the reading is due. We will accept comments up to a week after the lecture for half the points. Alternatively you can submit twice the number of comments up to a week after the lecture for full points.

Examples of good comments:

  • Clarification of some point or detail presented in reading.
  • Questions about the readings or answers to other peoples questions.
  • Connections to relevant idea and topics on the web.

In some cases we will provide a set of questions for the readings that you should consider as you do the reading. Well thought out answers to these questions that extend the discussion and do not repeat earlier commetns will also count as substantive comments.

We have added a simple commenting mechanism to the wiki as explained on the wiki homepage. We have also posted a couple of examples of comments for the second lecture.
